Commissions Are a Joint Endeavour

You have a room in your house or apartment that you are trying to decorate so that you feel completely at home in the space. There are so many considerations.

Should a piece of furniture go on that wall?

If some artwork is called for, what size would work and what mood captures what you want in your home?

Commissioning an artist to do a painting can seem like an extravagant and potentially risky thing to do. I get it. What if you don’t like the end result, will you feel pressure to take the piece anyway?

I wouldn’t wish to talk you into anything, but consider this: by commissioning a painting from me, you get to be a partner in the creative process. You get to choose a size that will work well for the space you have. Size matters. You also have input into a palette that you resonate with, and finally, you can also suggest a direction that interests you.

My SATISFACTION GUARANTEED promise is just that. I would not be happy for you to have something in your home that I am not in love with and that you don’t like. There is always someone who will love it so I am OK with keeping any piece of art under my wing until it finds the right home.

This is a video of one of my check-ins with a client who commissioned a 50th Annivrsary INSIGHT PORTRAIT for their parents 50th. Even though this was a few years ago when I did these personal portrait paintings, the process is the same for comtemporary work.

The Why and How of Commissions?

Finding the right piece of art can take weeks, months or even a couple of years. Since arranging a commission with me is risk free, you can see if a painting that you contributed to birthing fits the bill in a matter of a few weeks. The odds that you will find satisfaction are increased because you have been part of the process.

It all starts with a conversation. Once we get a joint sense of the criteria for a painting that fits the bill. I get going and check in with you along the way.

My prices fit a gradated per square inch formula so you know upfront a ball park price for a painting. The pricing schedule for commissioned work is the same as that of all my other paintings

If the end result works then we celebrate and complete the previously agreed upon transaction. If the work doesn’t fit the bill then the client is free to find another solution. I encourage people to be in love with the final result whether it is my work or that of another artist.

I am always delighted beyond words to be approached to try to solve an empty wall problem for someone .

My kids are my biggest fans. This video shows some paintings in place in Karen’s apartment. Three of them were painted to fit her new surroundings and two others were altered to suit her taste. The tour starts at 18:05.

The idea behind this painting was to fit into a contemporary suburban home. It needed to be big enough to hold a particular wall. The leather sofa says that a man can be comfortable sitting here watching TV. There is a linear aspect to this piece that leans more toward the masculine than most of my work. The palette is subdued overall but the pops of colour are an important link to the other pieces of colurful art in the home.

The client wanted to add some interest to an architecturally plain dining room space. The wall that this painting could be viewed from the kitchen sink so a cheerful piece was in order. There were heirloom furniture pieces that needed to be considered in terms of making it all work.

My daughter, Jen, is setting up a “bachelor” suite in her home. The room is a lovely rich yellow that is easy on the eye. There is an existing painting in this room that is a good size with saturated blues, oranges and yellows. It is a minimalist landscape.  This painting was done, not to match, but rather to provide a contrast in styles. The first one sits over. sofa and this fits over the headboard of the bed on the far side of this large room.
